Yeah, that was the wrong horse to back. I'm in that demo and I thought he was terrible. TK would be a better fit, but I feel he would rip Theismann every chance he could get

Al Michaels appears poised to join NBC
BY ED SHERMAN
Chicago Tribune

CHICAGO - Al Michaels said he didn't want to be the story during the Super Bowl this week. Then he went out and made himself the story.
During a conference call Monday, Michaels was grilled from all directions about his status for next season. He has signed a contract to be ESPN's play-by-play voice for "Monday Night Football" in 2006, but there's speculation that Michaels wants out of the deal so he can join his current partner, John Madden, for NBC's coverage of Sunday night games, which begins in the fall.

Michaels could have defused all the talk simply by saying, "I'm not going to NBC. I intend to do the Monday games for ESPN next season. End of story."

Instead, Michaels danced around the issue. At one point he said he didn't want to sound like "a State Department official," only to come off like a State Department official doing his best to avoid giving a candid answer.

"I'm preparing for the Super Bowl," Michaels said. "I don't want to be part of anything that detracts from the telecast. Next season starts next week."

Later, when Michaels was asked why he wouldn't just deny the NBC rumors, he said, "Whatever I address, it gets parsed up in many different ways, and everyone will run with it."

Michaels, though, provided plenty to run with. Clearly he is having second thoughts about the ESPN deal. It seems obvious he is going to explore getting out of his contract and jumping to NBC. The process might already be in progress.

During the summer, Michaels rejected NBC's bid to join Madden. The offer was said to be for $1 million less than the $4 million he is set to receive from ESPN.

Michaels also said that his heart was with "Monday Night Football," where he has made the calls since 1986. It sounded good at the time.
But Michaels is no dummy. Despite ESPN's insistence to the contrary, NBC's deal with the NFL appears to be the more attractive prime-time package.

NBC, not ESPN, will get the coveted flexible schedule, which ensures the network will show competitive games late in the season. NBC also will air wild-card playoff games and has the 2009 Super Bowl. ESPN won't cover any postseason games.

To compound matters, NBC also will have Madden, perhaps Michaels' best broadcast partner, and Monday night producer Fred Gaudelli and director Drew Esocoff, two men he greatly admires.

Michaels, 61, has a considerable ego, just like the rest of the top-tier broadcasters. He doesn't want this to be his last Super Bowl.
If Michaels wants out, ESPN probably would be willing to let him go. Already, there are reports that Mike Tirico will fill the Monday play-by-play slot, and that "Pardon the Interruption" co-host Tony Kornheiser would be brought in to join Joe Theismann in a three-man booth. Also, it is telling that NBC Chairman Dick Ebersol is holding the chair open for Michaels. He says he won't make a decision until after the Olympics.

When I think of TK going to MNF, I can't help drawing analogies to Howard Cosell. Of course, not at all the same person, but similarities in the role. Old Guy MNF resurrection...

Theismann finds 'MNF' affects how he's viewed

ESPN's Joe Theismann, at the Super Bowl hypefest in Detroit, finds people are treating him differently.
Not just because he's the heir apparent to what, historically, has been one of the top jobs in TV sports — analyst on Monday Night Football. He also finds himself tied to an offbeat mystery. "Up until this week," he says, "everybody was saying it was great that Al and I will be working together. But now, who knows?"

That would be ABC's Al Michaels, who was pursued by NBC for its Sunday night NFL game coverage, which starts next season, until ESPN announced in July that Michaels would stay at Disney to work ESPN Monday night games with Theismann.

Now, although Michaels has a contract with ESPN, there's speculation he still might jump to NBC — speculation that Michaels, in public forums, has chosen not to kill by stating flatly that he'll work for ESPN next season.

Theismann says he has "no idea" what Michaels will do, "but you'd have to be an ostrich to not know what's going on." Which raises a question that comes up with high-profile athletes but rarely with high-profile TV types: How do you get out of a contract?

Announcers, Theismann says, typically have "individual things built into their contracts, like in football." He notes there "have been rumors about (demands) for private planes and suites" by announcers. But he says he's not interested in such things: "I don't have any demands. I don't have planes, limos, suites. I take whatever rental car is available. ... I live on a farm, for crying out loud — I shovel manure."

NBC, in its fresh start with NFL games, might end up recycling the stars of ABC's now-defunct Monday night coverage if Michaels joins John Madden, who has committed to NBC. But Theismann suggests Michaels wouldn't be taking a step up: "I understand the league has said they want to make Sunday the special night. But it's like changing a national holiday. Monday night is so ingrained in fans. ... And when it comes to televising events, ESPN is second to none."

If Michaels goes to NBC, Mike Tirico, who will host ABC's Super Bowl pregame show Sunday and present the championship trophy, would seem an obvious choice to replace him on ESPN's play-by-play.

Then, creating a three-man booth might be considered. Tony Kornheiser, who co-hosts ESPN's Pardon The Interruption and tried out for the ABC MNF role that went to comedian Dennis Miller, says he's had discussions with ESPN "about a variety of things, including joining the booth. ... If somebody talks to you about Monday Night Football, you talk back." Kornheiser isn't sure if his chances are contingent on Michaels exiting. "That's the part I don't know," he says. "Those are the decisions I don't make."

Theismann agrees with the old maxim that building "chemistry" among announcers is key. Months ago, he traded brief voice-mails with Michaels after ESPN announced their pairing, but he says they still haven't talked about working together.

And they probably won't Sunday, during the annual Woodstock of Corporate America. Michaels, with Madden, will call the game. Theismann will do a corporate appearance for IBM, then a segment on ESPN's pregame show, then do another appearance with General Motors executives watching the game.

Theismann says: "It's important you enjoy the people you work with on TV. Then it's not work, it's friends talking about the game. ... I was going to wait until after Sunday to see if Al and I could spend some time together."

All new: You almost never see a network covering a new event still finalizing plans with the debut just a month away. But that's happening with the World Baseball Classic on ESPN, which will provide the event's world TV feed — except for the six games in Japan — and air 16 games on ESPN or ESPN2 and all 39 games on Spanish-language ESPN Deportes.

ESPN coordinating producer Tim Scanlan expects ESPN will enjoy some of the looser restrictions it gets in spring training games, where umpires can wear mikes and cameras. But he also expects ESPN to get to be more "aggressive" with handheld cameras and mikes and hopes to bring cameras and mikes out to pitching mounds to hear managers talk to pitchers.

But given the event's national teams, those chats could be in Korean or Chinese. Not to worry, Scanlan says. Because ESPN does the world feed, TV producers from participating countries will be on site to eavesdrop and translate. Then there's ESPN announcer Orestes Destrade, an ex-Florida Marlin and native of Cuba who speaks Spanish and, having played in Japan, also knows Japanese. Says Scanlan, "He'll be key."

Seconding the motion. Although graphically challenged, I think the bus should be a wide load, deferring to age and gravity. That's where Madden's cruiser came up short. And, of course, it needs an appropriate sponsor: I sense a poll coming up...

Come to think of it, some recommended features to the Kornheiser Kruiser:
-computerized driving range in the back, where the surface automatically adjusts to the bumps in the road (a al Segway)
-pseudo wine cellar, fully stocked
-a continually filled case of JW Blue
-2 TVs with Tivo and DishTV: already programmed AND PLUGGED IN
-Sirius and XM
-sidecars for Andy, Gary, Nigel (unless one of them wants to drive)
-a chef
-a treadmill
-unlimited wireless Net access (via either Verizon or Cingular), i.e., National Broadband
-a megaphone (to shout at the sidecar riders)

From Slate.com by Mickey Kaus

Kornheiser v. Kurtz!

Two months ago, Katharine Seelye of the New York Times wrote, regarding WaPo media reporter Howie Kurtz:

He draws salaries from two of the most important media companies in the country: CNN, which is owned by Time Warner, and The Post, which is owned by The Washington Post Company. Such arrangements do not violate Post policy. In fact, The Post has quite liberal rules regarding extracurricular work by its reporters and editors. [Emph. added]

Thursday, WaPo ran a piece about its own sportswriter, Tony Kornheiser, who is being wooed by various television and radio stations, including some owned by Washington Redskins owner Daniel Snyder:

Kornheiser would be prohibited from writing for The Post if he accepted a position with a Snyder-owned company. Under the newspaper's conflict-of-interest rules, a sportswriter cannot write about a team while accepting payment from it. [Emph. added]

Hmm. Could Seelye, as suspected, have been a wee bit conned about what does and doesn't normally violate Post policy? If Kornheiser can't write about a team while accepting payment from it for extracurricular work why can Kurtz write about CNN while accepting payment from it for extracurricular work? Are the ethics rules tighter for sportswriters than for reporters? Tighter than for reporters whose beat is chastising other reporters for violating ethics rules? Does Kurtz get a pass because he's a bigger star at the paper than Kornheiser? How does Kornheiser feel about that? Should Kornheiser hire Kurtz's lawyer? ... P.S.: At the bottom of the Post's piece on Kornheiser, we learn

Staff writer Howard Kurtz contributed to this report.

Did Kurtz himself write the paragraph about "the newspaper's conflict-of-interest rules"? If so, wasn't that itself ... you know, a conflict of interest? ... P.P.S.: Nah. After all, it's not as if whoever wrote the graf in question described the ethics rules narrowly, as if they apply only to "a sportswriter" but not to any other kind of reporter! Oh, wait. ... 1:24 A.M. link

hmmmm it goes from

A DCRTVer tells us: ESPN sports anchor Dan Patrick strongly hinted Friday afternoon that Washington Post sports columnist Tony Kornheiser, who is heard on WTEM and seen on ESPN, is taking the "Monday Night Football" gig. Plus, more rumblings that Al Michaels is leaving ABC after the Super Bowl.....

these are completely different.

BTW, Tony has offically said he has not been offered anything.

Oh, and DCRTV is just a guy who collects news stories. He often puts his own opinion/spin on things that are not always the exact truth.

I just read that, and I'm trying to figure out how they got the "just announced" part out of the DCRTV blurb. DCRTV's blurb sounds like a readers take, anyhow, and they make it out that way.

DCRTV was how I found out TK was going back to a local show, actually. It was what came up on a google search late summer of 2004, when the rumblings of a local show first started.

From DCRTV.com: "More On TK To "MNF" - 2/5 - DCRTV hears from a reliable source that Washington Post sports media superstar Tony Kornheiser "has agreed to join the 'Monday Night Football' crew if Al Michaels walks. Al will inform ABC/ESPN this week if he plans on leaving or staying at the network."
