June 15th, 2001:

I woke up at 10:30 AM rested and relaxed. Mary didn't like the hotel room we were given (a King Size Bed with a pullout couch), so we moved into a room with two queen size beds. It was much more comfortable there.

I must say, on our trip down, we took the George Washington Memorial Parkway. We couldn't get over how CLEAN it was. It was truly a gem of a road to drive on. It reminded me of a really clean Teconic Parkway.

Mary and I had planned on going to see Washington's major monuments. We had to drive around to find parking that was 1) close and 2) available. We eventually parked near the Tidal Basin. I snapped a nice panoramic of the Jefferson Memorial and the Washington Monument. We made our way to the reflecting pool. I forgot how long the damn pool was. It was HUGE! We walked to the Lincoln Memorial and snapped some more pictures.

Mary and I walked up the steps on the Lincoln Memorial to take in the monument. Lots of steps. The last time I walked up those steps was at night. The Lincoln Statue was a sight to behold during the day. Mary and I also took time to snap some pictues of the Washington Monument with the reflection pool in the shot. It was a murky pool, and I think that means something, but I can't remember.

We headed right to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Being an amateur photographer, Mary thought it would be a good place to shoot some good, emotional photos. There was this one man who was at the memorial in a classic pose remembering a friend (perhaps). Mary thought it would make a powerful photograph, but she decided to not take the photo, partly out of respect, partly because he looked over, and Mary did not want to disrupt his privacy. I did notice that there was a Lehecka on the wall, but I don't believe he is a close relative. He was from Jackson, Mississippi. I think he might have been a distant relative.

After the moving visit to the Memorial, we headed off toward the White House. I'd only seen the White House in passing once, and I thought it would be nice to see it without being in a bus. While looking at the south lawn, we noticed that someone was shooting a movie. We actually walked through the set, and no one told us to beat it or get lost. That's Hollywood for ya.

After snapping some shots of the White House, we made our way to the Washington Monument. We'd hoped to make a trip to the top of the Monument, but it was closed. It was still a marvelous ediface to behold. After snapping some more pictures, we headed back to the car to 1) rest (I mean, we did walk 3 or 4 miles in 90 degree weather. What do you want from us?) and 2) cruise around to see some more sites.

We finally made it back to the car, and we commenced cruising. We actually wanted to drive around to plan out our day for tomorrow. Soon we realized that we hadn't eaten all day, and it might be good to stop and get a bite. We stopped in this deli. I had the most god-awful sandwich EVER. I also bought some water that was past its expiration date. Your guess is as good as mine as to the reasoning for water to have an expiration date, but whatever. It was food. Then again, it burned my mouth. I thought I was going to die. I wish I had the name of the place so to warn people about eating there, but it's not on the tip of my tongue. Oh well, just avoid places that are about to close. Ugh...

After "eating," Mary and I took a walk. We actually got to the north side of the White House, and took some more pics. We then forgot that we just walked about 5 miles before, and decided to get our car and drive back to the hotel to rest up.

Upon arrival to the hotel, we took off our shoes and just mellowed out. I always love the feeling of walking into a room that had the AC on all day. Damn, that's a great feeling.

Our plans were to go to dinner, then drive back down to Washington to see the city at night. After relaxing in the hotel for an hour, we decided we were too damn tired, and just needed to have dinner. We chose an Outback Steakhouse to eat. I always love that place. We both had prime rib. It was OK. The meal was nothing to write home about, but good enough to write here about.

After dinner, we headed back to the hotel, and plopped in our beds. There was a sense of anticipation for tomorrow, though, because tomorrow, we would see Lewis Black live.
